A group of left-wing, big city mayors have gathered together to decline an invitation to the White House over the Trump administration’s crackdown on law-breaking sanctuary cities and their abetting of illegal aliens.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, Chicago’s Rham Emanuel, and New Orleans’ Mitch Landrieu, and others banded together to refuse the White House invitation, CNN reported.
Landrieu told reporters in Washington that he would not go to the meeting under “false pretenses,” complaining that the meeting is supposed to focus on infrastructure but that the Justice Department’s sanctuary cities move changed the equation.
“An attack on one of our cities’ mayors who is following the Constitution is an attack on all of us. I will not be attending that meeting,” he said.
The Big Apple’s mayor, a man who infamously called himself a socialist, also took to Twitter to say he would not be attending the White House meeting.
“I will NOT be attending today’s meeting at the White House after @realDonaldTrump’s Department of Justice decided to renew their racist assault on our immigrant communities,” de Blasio wrote. “It doesn’t make us safer and it violates America’s core values.”
Thus far, one Republican mayor has also joined the boycott because of the administration’s focus on defeating sanctuary policies.
At least one Republican mayor has decided not to attend the event. A spokesperson for the US Conference of Mayors also told CNN that Elizabeth Kautz, the Republican mayor of Burnsville, Minnesota, has declined the invite due to the Justice Department. Kautz is a past president of the US Conference of Mayors.
The Dept. of Justice issued a statement to note that the meeting is meant to help cities understand what is to come as the DOJ begins its campaign to enforce immigration laws.
“Our goal here is to ensure compliance with applicable federal law. Our goal is to ensure that jurisdictions that will comply with applicable federal law receive the the grant money and can keep the grant money that they have already obtained,” a Justice Dept. spokesman said.
The DOJ has begun to look at ways to prevent left-wing mayors and city councils from subverting federal immigration laws by claiming that the laws don’t apply inside their borders.
White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters added that there were other things the White House wants to discuss in the meeting. Walters said the meeting is set to discuss “the growing economy, as well as working together to tackle the opioid epidemic and rebuild the nation’s aging infrastructure.”
Walters added that the White House is disappointed over the way the Democrat mayors are politicizing the meeting.
Some far left liberals imagine that New Orleans Mayor Landrieu might be one of the dozens of Democrats who are eyeing a run for the White House in 2020.
The Big Easy’s mayor recently made a splash with a statement about his decision to eliminate several Confederate statues. His press conference upped his standing among liberals.
