As far as politicians go, it doesn’t get much more frustrating than Sen. Jeff Flake. He has an “R” next to his name, but don’t be fooled he gave up on being a Republican when Donald Trump showed up. It’s unfortunate because over the course of his career, Flake was fairly conservative but when Trump showed up everything changed. Flake just couldn’t get past the fact that the American people were fed up with the Romney, Bush, McCain wing of the party that made plenty of promises but delivered no results.
Some people try to make the argument that the Republican party shifted away from conservatism but that’s kind of a ridiculous argument when you consider the fact that Trump has been rock solid in that department. When Heritage Foundation is saying that your first year as president is more conservative than Reagan you are probably doing a good job.
The fact of the matter is that it’s Jeff Flake who has put his feelings before what’s good for the voters.
That was very clear when he made this ridiculous speech in Congress announcing he’s retiring.
Don’t believe that nonsense. Flake didn’t retire because he has principles. He retired because there was no chance he’d win his reelection effort. If he had convictions and truly believed Trump should be stopped then he would run again and try to stop him.
Before Flake hits the road he has made it clear he is going to do everything he can to undermine the current Republican party.
That was clear yet again when he came out and slammed the president’s recent remarks in Ohio about Democrats being “treasonous”.
From Business Insider:
Sen. Jeff Flake, a retiring Arizona Republican and outspoken critic of the president, denounced President Donald Trump’s Monday comment calling Democrats “treasonous” for not applauding during certain parts of his State of the Union address last week.
Amid the immediate firestorm of criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill, the White House claimed the president was “clearly joking.”
But Flake argued humor was no excuse.
“I have seen the president’s most ardent defenders use the now-weary argument that the president’s comments were meant as a joke, just sarcasm, only tongue in cheek,” Flake said on the Senate floor Tuesday. “But treason is not a punchline, Mr. President.”
We all know what Trump meant and there’s no doubt that many people didn’t like what he said. But, Flake went above and beyond to slam the leader of his party and the leader of his country when he didn’t have to. That’s pretty low brow even if you think that what the president did was low brow.
Sarah Sanders was asked about Flake’s comments and her response was perfect.
From Washington Examiner:
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders had a simple message to Sen. Jeff Flake after the outgoing Arizona senator criticized Trump on the floor of the Senate Tuesday: “I don’t really care.”
“I don’t really care what Sen. Flake has to say, I don’t think his constituents do either and I think that’s why his numbers are in the tank,” Sanders said during the Tuesday press briefing.
Trump voters don’t care about the Jeff Flakes and John McCains of the world.
They care about passing the agenda that they voted Trump into office to pass.
You have to remember that Democrats will never like Trump no matter what he says. This idea that Trump needs to just say nicer words to get things done with Democrats is just nonsense.
Props to Sarah for recognizing that.
